Uppsala University recruits Professor Don Kulick
27 January 2015
The internationally recognised anthropologist Professor Don Kulick is being recruited by Uppsala University. He will lead a broad, multidisciplinary research programme funded by the Swedish Research Council which will allow us to better understand vulnerability in people, animals and the environment.
Don Kulick is currently professor at the University of Chicago in the US. He is being recruited by Uppsala University to run a large-scale research programme involving researchers from several disciplines. The Swedish Research Council has decided to grant Uppsala University SEK 80 million for the project.
‘This is an incredibly important recruitment in an important field. The research programme Don Kulick will lead will contribute knowledge on how we should face some of our time’s greatest challenges’, says Eva Åkesson, Vice-Chancellor at Uppsala University.
‘Don Kulick is an outstanding researcher in social anthropology, as well as in languages and gender studies. He is also a fenomenally skilful and inspiring teacher’, says Maria Ågren, pro-dean of the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University.
Don Kulick will start and lead the research programme ‘New Perspectives on Vulnerability’, which ties into ongoing research at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, offering an opportunity to deepen and renew current research.
‘The research will investigate how we, in a respctful way, can relate to vulnerable individuals, groups, species and environments, that we can’t necessarily understand, but which are part of our world and deserve to be treated with dignity. It is important for researchers to engage in such urgent issues across disciplinary boundaries, and Don Kulick is the right person to lead this work’, says Maria Ågren.
The research programme will span over ten years.
